The Best Fanfic of All Time-A Step Down From Perfect by Byoshi

Alright, guys. This is it. The big one. THE BEST FANFICTION OF ALL TIME. What could it be? Does anyone know? To that I say "Did you not see the title? Read it, for god's sake!"

1. A Step Down From Perfect by Byoshi

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Drama, Friendship, Romance, Angst
Rating: Teen for thematics, slight language.
Type: Chapterfic, 83,000 words
Status: Finished
Last Updated: October 9th, 2009

Description: Samus, a self-conscious bounty hunter with eyes for the perfect Marth (who at the moment is dating the equally perfect Zelda) is slowly brought to reality after meeting the mussy, down to Earth Captain Falcon during the Melee fighting tournament. The fighters' world is turned upside down when a rebellion against the sadistic authority figure, Master Hand, starts to take place with Mewtwo and Peach as the catalysts.

Starring Characters: Samus, Falcon, Peach, Marth, Mewtwo, Zelda, Master Hand, Fox, Falco, Link, Pichu, Crazy Hand.

(Note: I kinda went crazy with the quote gun, so I hope you don't mind.)

Review: I wanted to turn this review in two days ago, on the second anniversary of Perfect's completion, but I didn't get around to it. I'm just... amazed at this fic. Simply amazed. I've come to consider it the gospel on how I write today, fanfiction or not.

The story is hard to explain in one line. There's such a beautiful interweave between all of the main characters that it's best to let the story speak for itself. But the summary, I hope, is a good start.

Sometimes, she'd imagine she was Zelda. Or someone like her. Samus would imagine if things would be any more different if she had a powerful family name, or if she was beautiful, or if she was elegant in everything she did. If she was a princess, or if her name was something as melodic as Zelda.

And sometimes, she hated him. She hated how he acted so damn nice to her and then left it at that. It hurt to the point that it never really went away. She'd much rather have him despise her. At least that would take her out of her limbo of false hope.

I've come to love the story idea of two people doing something together somewhere and through it growing as people, most likely in love. I mean, 16 of my about 40 stories follow this exact plot line. It's sort of my shtick. It's about putting characters in the situations they need and the settings they need for something to affect them or to set the tone for the story.

It's a pretty calculative thing to do sometimes, even for oneshots. What I love that Byoshi did is that she creates the mood, the scene, from scratch every chapter. She incorporates the setting, fleshes it out, puts the characters in it, and then directs it. Good writing is also directing, in my opinion, and Byoshi is a master director. Every scene radiates with such a cohesive, orchestrated beauty. I know I've said I like intricate detail and orchestration a lot in, like, every fic, but Byoshi takes it to an all new level. You can tell that the entire story has a function and use in every part.

Link rubbed his face again, a small habit Samus was starting to notice now. "I'm just a forest boy earning a small reputation to keep his village going. That's hardly the same level as a prince, a princess and the galaxy's greatest hunter."

"But you're a hero...you saved Hyrule...Zelda told me once."

"Heroes are glorified fools."

That includes the characters. If a character gets more than a paragraph or two of screen time, the character is defined effortlessly and becomes likable. The heroic, charismatic Fox, the grouchy, competitive Falco, the quiet but supportive Link, the adorable, active Pichu, and the not-so-perfect perfect princess Zelda all engage you even though they're not the mains, and they're all useful. I personally love them all (especially Fox. :D)

Of course, The main characters are beautiful on their own right. The idea of Samus being less than confident is usually very taboo for fans of the bounty hunter, but Byoshi makes it work, quite well, still giving her an affirming amount of strength throughout her emotional weaknesses. Falcon is incredibly imperfect, as the title implies. He believes rumors, he can be rude, cocky and even screws up sometimes, not to mention he's not the handsomest in the mansion. But he's still very kind, courageous, loyal and caring, and a completely likable guy. And it's about time we had a male lead in a romance that is as imperfect as the female is often made out to be.

"... Can you predict the future, Mewtwo? With your psychic, I mean," she said. He looked up. "...What's mine like?"

He looked so much less formidable when his frown and narrowed eyes disappeared. He was bemused, but Samus swore she saw the tiniest glint of amusement in his eyes. The long purple tail flicked from left to right.

"Give me a moment," he answered. Samus did. "Let's see. You will definitely earn a strong reputation as a feared bounty huntress. You'll marry twice, have a string of affairs along the way and give birth to nine children."

It started from her stomach, rippling up the throat and warming her heart. She laughed, hugging her knees and shaking her head. Mewtwo had kept up his straight face. But within a few seconds, a low growl reverberated in his throat and a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

"You're horrible," she said to him.

"You ask for a lot when you want me to read into the future; I can hardly read minds at the moment. But as far as I know, you make your own future."

Peach is also brought out of the stereotype, becoming a strong, professional woman who is still kind, cheerful and optimistic. She genuinely cares about Mewtwo, despite the fact that he is resistant to all her attempts to win him over. Mewtwo himself, while being cold and resistant, has a wry sense of humor and genuine investment in the goings on of the mansion.

And of course, there's the oh-so-not-perfect Marth. On the outside he is charming and beautiful. On the inside he's, well, the same. But Marth as a whole has flaws that Samus doesn't see, but he's still a good guy and not villainized.

Of course, the Hands, our villains of choice. Master Hand is admittedly straightforward in his sadism and distaste for his fighters. But the way he works is still quietly and suspiciously- his actions are never blatantly stated, he's the demented wizard of Melee. A truly engaging villain. Speaking of demented, Crazy hand is the right balance of crazy- still truly mentally deficient but with some form of intelligence. (he also provides a good game to figure out the schemes of Master Hand- props, Byoshi.)

What I adore about these characters and praise Byoshi for without end is how she takes these characters out of their stereotypes or their canon, but still keeping them true to character. That is called making them real, and that is simply freaking brilliant. It's how I learned.

"It adds insult to injury, doesn't it?"

Falcon was back in his car and was already reversing. Samus pushed her thoughts of Marth out of her head (very reluctantly).

"What does?"

"Mewtwo haveing a trainer. I heard he's got a bit of a background, so the Master Hand wanted some control over him. According to Link, Mewtwo has a bit of a hard time trusting people as it is; it's even worse for him to have to take orders from Peach or the Master Hand."

Samus didn't reply. She did feel a bit sorry for Mewtwo, but in all honesty, it was nothing to do with her. Smashers loved rumours and hot gossip, but Samus never really cared for them. It wasn't like they involved or affected her.

The plot itself is spectacularly executed as well. The rebellion idea has been used before, but never like this. There are rarely violent actions in the story, but the action is so real even if it's not physical. You can feel things shift and change and progress and it's thrilling without being physical. That's an amazing approach and accomplishment.

And the cliche is true. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and sometimes, you'll applaud.

The writing is simply effortless as well. It's structured well, the dialogue is smart, witty, and creates whatever emotional effect it's going for. Never does she resort to straight up manipulation but you can feel for the characters and the story. You're roped into it. I meant to browse a chapter before I went to bed a few months ago and ended up staying up till 1:30 in the morning, tears in my eyes and a smile on my face. (Moral of the story- start reading at around 4? :) )

This is simply an accomplishment of literature, fanfiction or not. And this is the best fanfic I have ever read. I've taken my influence from it, my passion, my knowledge and my love from it. It's remarkable. I really don't have much else to say.

Just... thank you, Byoshi.

She ripped up some grass and clenched a hand into a fist, sighing in exasperation. "Master Hand will worm it out of him. Game and Watch is a coward and the thought of being punished by his boss is probably more frightening than Mewtwo. Master Hand will play around with me a bit more, destroy the lives of everyone else I care about and see to it that I'm fired. I'll be leaving this Mansion and giving the Federation a disgraced name. Master Hand will target you next, I'm sure of it. He'll mess with your mind to get revenge on me-"

Falcon punched her shoulder lightly. "Hey. Don't tell me that's the reason you've been avoiding me. I'm not going anywhere. Master Hand can come at me with all the mind games he has, but I won't give up on you, Samus. Look at me."

Reluctantly, her eyes met his. In this evening light, they could almost pass as hazel.

"You're not the kind of person who gives in. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, and it's happened all at once, that's all. You've landed yourself in the biggest mess possible, but with some time, it'll work out."

And that's the list folks. I'll update with one final "Summary Post" another time. Thanks for reading.

2nd Best Fanfiction of All Time- Firefly by LightningLaveau

A Note Beforehand- I swear to god, there is a sliver, a SLIVER, of difference between two and one. I must have flip flopped so many times between the top 2 that I lost track. Ultimately, I settled this one into a very close number 2. You could almost consider it number 1.5. But that's not very tidy. ;)

2. Firefly by LightningLaveau

Section: Mario
Genre: Drama, Thriller, Humor, Friendship, Romance
Rating: Teen for some language, alcohol and smoking- also, the story revolves around underground illegal racing.
Type: Chapterfic, 63,000 words
Status: Ongoing
Last Updated: July 28, 2011

Description (Oh wow I remembered to add this part in, unfortunately it will just be copypasta from the story description this time!): In the racing-obsessed metropolis Mushroom City, Bowser's kart team tops the charts. An unexpected chain of events forces him to confront both his lurid past and the Mushroom Kingdom's oppressive ruler in this AU fic set in the Mario Kart: Double Dash world.

Starring Characters: Bowser, Toadette, Rosalina, Lakitu, Dry Bones, Daisy, Toad... and effectively every other Mario character in existence.

Review: When a story gets me, a specific reviewer, a story analyst, to drop all pretenses, all the regulations and the details and just HAVE A GOOD F**KING TIME, that's a story that is really special in my book.

This story, as I told Laveau herself many times as I ogled over her work, is like a damn good TV show that keeps on updating (irregularly but still) and you enjoy every update. But this is a TV show that does everything right, too.

Rainbow Road. God-forsaken Rainbow Road.

Whose idea had it been to put in a vertical suction vacuum? Why build the longest racetrack in the Cup in outer space? Who had the time and money to build the thing in the first place, a Lisa Frank acid trip in the middle of nowhere? Now that he thought about it, how could they ever breathe up there? If Rosalina hadn't—

No. No. Don't think about that. Think about now. At this place—ugh.

Lakitu appeared, holding up the starting lights. Bowser's right calf clenched instinctively as the three-second red light flashed.

Of course, the ridiculous construction of the place was coupled with quite a few areas in which he could show off his skills. Like all tracks in the Special Cup, the place was designed for veterans like him. It tested him and it gave him room for growth. Little to no guard rails, treacherous slippery road, and—he would never admit it aloud—pretty.

"…two… one…"A hush fell over the crowd. "GO!" He hit the pedal for a rocket start.

The characters- how I love the characters. Mushroom City, Kingdom, and all its inhabitants have been humanized a great deal (Laveau had a livejournal on this but for the life of me I can't find it- PM her and I'm sure she'll be glad to send it over.) It's essentially a somewhat realistic world (but not entirely, as you'll see.)

The characters, though, still ring of the life and spirit of their video game forms, but with such expansion and well tending that you grow to like them, and they distinguish themselves. You'll remember every character at least a little bit as you read through, which is great cause there are a lot.

The characters also have great relationships and interactions. Bowser's team is the greatest example of this; you truly feel the urge to root for the good guys. I also love the chemistry between Bowser and Toadette. It's not romantic at all, but you can totally tell they have each other's back- think Callen and Sam from NCIS: LA, or any other cop show of your choice. They're a great pair, definitely my favorite character interaction in Fanfiction. Also the reason I main Toadette in Mario Party (well that, and "Mushroom!")

The plot itself is steadily moving forward, giving away just enough to keep you hooked and wanting more, but not so much that it's overwhelming and scatters in your brain. It's hard to say much without revealing the plot, but think of it like what I've been told the Wire is like. (God I want to see that show.) Continuous reads will be beneficial if you're looking to catch up but it's by no means necessary. While there's satisfying amounts of info and twists each chapter, the plot takes its time. I think you'll find it a satisfying weekend read.

The action is great too. It's by no means an easy task to make kart racing so badass and relate it only to text, but you wouldn't know it by the way Laveau does it. It's fluent, vivid and engaging. She could make a novel adaption of Fast Five a critically acclaimed bestseller.

It's incredibly hard to find a fault with this story. It's a popcorn FlICk that is done just right but has enough emotional levity and a bit of weight to make you actually give a crap. A lot of movies don't even do this.

The worst thing about this story is that it is very underrated. This should be a huge story, but Laveau only has a four or five reader fanbase. This is, by far, the best ongoing story on this site. If you're a Mario fan, or a racing fan, or a good literature fan, this is THE story you want to check out, and thus you should. Laveau is going to be a big thing the day someone experienced in media comes across her work, so don't you want to be able to say that you knew her when she was writing Firefly? :D

3rd Best Fanfiction Of All Time-Distorted by Guessworks

3. Distorted by Guessworks

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Angst, Horror, Thriller, Romance, Alternate Universe
Rating: Older teen for drug use, terrifying imagery, and mentions of suicide
Type: Short Story, 8000 words
Status: Completed
Completed: February 25, 2011

Starring Characters: Sheik, Roy, Zelda, Link, Samus

I was passing through the Smash Brothers section one day in February. I didn't intend to stay long, but then a contest caught my eye. Two people named Foxpilot and PitFTW were clever enough to come up with an Alternate Universe romance instead of the overused and occasionally cliche Smash Bros universe and its stigmas. I was interested and read up on the entries. When I found this story, I was floored. I couldn't believe there was writing this good... anywhere. Inspired by this and other works in the contest, I decided to start my Fanfiction career with an entry for their contest. (Also just yesterday I found out I came in second to last. Awesome! :D)

And I haven't left that section yet. And nothing's been the same since.

Now, I love Foxpilot and Pit, but I have got to say that Guessworks' entry being one of the bottom entries is one of the biggest crocks of bullshit I've ever heard. She was robbed as this is not only the best entry to their contest but the best short story in the entire section. And this is the one section I've read up and down. She absolutely killed it.

What makes this story haunting is not so much the acts of physical violence which one would normally think would provoke fear and horror. Guessworks takes you into the mind of a haunted, somewhat insane young woman (Sheik) who is convinced that she is nothing and that her perfect sister (Zelda) is evil and seeks to ruin her life. And as you read on, you start to wonder what is real and what is fiction- it's not quite as straightforward as it seems.

I look to my left at the mirrored wall. In the reflection I see a pale girl with big grey eyes, pin-straight blonde hair, a big nose, pointy shoulders, knobby knees... People tell me that I am beautiful. We are semi-identical, after all, but I know they all believe that she is the prettier twin. People tell me that I am not fat, that I am skinny. I don't believe that either.

Suddenly the girl in the mirror morphs into the one I hate most. She stands there, in her fancy crimson costume, grinning at me like there is nothing wrong with the world. Screeching, I punch her with all of the strength I can muster. The glass shatters and rains around me.

I start to panic when I see her ugly head on every single shard. I turn around, but she is on the mirror behind me. I am surrounded by her.

"What's wrong, dear sister? Aren't you happy?"

Her falsely sweet voice makes me sick.

"You are my understudy! You should be proud."

I don't want to be proud. I have failed! I was not perfect, I failed! But she wasn't perfect either! She deserves nothing!

"Dear sister, you are mistaken... I deserve the world on it's knees."

"STOP!" I scream at the top of my lungs, frantically scratching my ears. "STOP! SHUT UP!"

What makes it terrifying is the uncut, raw trip into Sheik's tortured psyche. Guessworks holds no punches and keeps no subtlety. And while normally that means a shlock of cheese and cliche and oh god this again, here it's just a knife to the heart. She proves that you don't have to be subtle to be true and realistic.

I could go on and on about how remarkable her interpretation of Sheik is, but there's a lot to talk about here. The plot itself is simple enough to leave things open to anything instead of going down a worn path. The haunted and self-loathing Sheik is the understudy to her ballet sister, Zelda, with whom she shares a hateful, volatile situation. Zelda is doing the ballet with her boyfriend, Link, who Sheik loves dearly. Link's understudy is Roy, a kindly young man who cares for Sheik. This is the short basis of the plot as there isn't much else to reveal without spoilers. But the interesting thing about the plot is that it doesn't quite feel solid and yet things really do happen. Usually a plot not being solid is a bad thing but I quite like it here with it not feeling cemented. You're busy being drawn in and not taking events into account. It's truly hypnotic.

Even the way she writes it is absolutely masterful. At the beginning of the chapters is a bit of the ballet script, which distinctly but subtly parallels the story itself (is that a paradox, distinct yet subtle?) I've come to love people who truly compose their stories, and Guess is no exception. She is a master of it.

It's clear that expertly handled raw psychological and emotional trauma is more frightening than watching Jigsaw kill someone by disembowelment six hundred and sixty six times. But at the end of the day, it leaves you more moved than those murders ever will.

This was the true winner of Pit/Fox's contest. Sorry, Pikana. Your story was great, but this was the best of them all. And definitely one of the best I've ever read. I owe this story and its brilliant author a lot.

4th Best Fanfic of All Time-A War Apart by Sigcius

4. A War Apart by Sigcius

Section: Advance Wars
Genre: War, Drama, Angst, Thriller
Rating: Teen to Older teen for violence, occasional swearing and personal trauma
Type: Chapterfic, 140,000 words
Status: Completed
Completed: December 29, 2010

Starring Characters: OC Christoph, Sami, Max, Eagle, Rachel, OCs Sepp, Roma, Sigfried

This was actually the very first fanfic I ever favorite and what really moved Fanfiction from a guilty pleasure by total geeks to an art form just as powerful as real life writing in my eyes. And it still holds up today.

This Advance Wars story is as close to a real novel as it gets. Sigcius only wrote one serious story his entire time on the forums but it’s one of the most impressive feats this site will ever have. I think I should break it down for y’all.

The gunman's brown eyes squinted in the dusty wind. The lifeless eyes of the soldier's mask bore no emotion, but his pain was evident. He no longer sobbed or squealed, but his breathing was heavy and erratic. He clutched at his wounded leg.

"Please… please…"

Dark brown, almost black hair obscured the gunman's eyes for a moment, but he brushed it out of the way. "Why?"

"Just… please, don't… don't kill me. I don't – I don't -"

"Not that," the gunman cut him off. "Why this?" He looked up for a moment, as if he were watching something on the far horizon. "Why did you do this?"

"I didn't… I mean… please, don't…"

He looked back down at the soldier and scooped up a handful of sand-colored dirt. Dry, no moisture at all. Then, slowly, he tipped his hand and poured it over the soldier's face. "Why would you do this? To my home? Bleed it so completely of life?"

"I was just following-"

"Don't give me that shit!" The black-clad soldier sobbed again. "Don't tell me you were just following orders!"

"Please," the soldier repeated. "I've got a family, see? I'm just a – a - a grunt!" He reached up to his mask and, with shaking hands, began to remove it.

Crack!

1. The game “Advance Wars” is a turn by turn strategy game that has waaaaaaaaaaaay too casual a feel for its subject matter, at least in the Cosmo Land timeline it’s set in. I mean, I love it to death but every single character is pretty much some sort of stereotype, whether light or heavy. Sigcius takes that and makes it believable, cohesive, gritty and intelligent as it should be, darkening the goof-off factor the games have until it becomes a war drama novel that you could literally see published.

The basic storyline is that the four nations that were formerly allies against Black Hole now start to turn on each other after triggering events start happening. It’s an interesting take but it’s made real and not cartoonish. It’s a story you can take seriously, and the AW section lacks in those.

2. It has original characters, not OCs. And what I mean is that the OCs aren’t typical OCs- to quote Foxpilot “a character that falls in luv with [the main] and haz his hiddz lolololololololol”. He has original characters- flawed, annoying, sometimes unlikable but in the end you still support him or watch him at least. Christoph is angry, sometimes arrogant and very misguided but that’s part of the beauty of the story.

3. It is all so intricate and so detailed that, again, it’s a novel. It’s a book, a real story. It says a lot about Sigcius that he’d write a full length book for a section that hardly anyone frequents. If he writes a real book, he will undoubtedly be a success because he practically wrote one here.

Simply put, it is an accomplishment in the evolution of fanfiction writing, and a remarkable piece in general. If you want to know how to write remarkable fiction, set some time aside to read this fic, whether you played this game or not.

Wow... only 3 fics left. Ain't that just crazy? And I'm very proud of these three fics. I'm still caught up about the order just a smidge, but I'm pretty sure numbers 3, 2 and 1 are decided.

Thanks for reading!

5th Best Fanfic of All Time- Speak Now! by Layla Kagamine

5. Speak Now by Layla Kagamine

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Romance
Rating: Teen- it’s a light story but does have language and occasional innuendo.
Type: Short Story Chapterfic- 6,000 words
Status: Completed
Completed: January 28, 2011

Starring Characters: Nana, Lucas

I'm willing to bet Layla Kagamine is a hopeless, attentive and intelligent romantic. I can tell that’s true even though we haven’t spoken much and that is because she wrote this remarkably relatable, in tune and thoughtful romance fic that reminds up of why we love and who we love.

The story is the winning entry to The Stupendous Jimbo’s Challenging Romance contest which outlawed dialogue of any sort. Reading this fic, though, you’re not thinking “Wow, she did a good job without dialogue!” You’re thinking “Wow… this- I know this. It’s remarkable how much she knows me.” And she knows romance and love, and you have a strong feeling that this is written from experience.

Today was my best friend Lucas's wedding with a lady whom he had met 6 months ago. Lucas is one beautiful man; he has beautiful eyes that put stars to shame, an attractive shy smile and a powerful brain (maybe the reason why he has PSI?). We have been best friends for almost a decade, ever since that first day I met him in grade 8. I was the new girl, moving into a new town, he was the shy guy...

And, we just went from there.

We have been inseparable ever since. I was there for him during his first crush. I was there for him when his mother and brother died. I was there when he won the gold medal for the math-letics and I was the one defending him whenever he got taunted or teased. Now, 10 years later, he's getting married... Now, normally, I would have loved to attend my best friend's wedding, be the supporting friend to share one of his best and happiest moments.

...

Due to some reasons, however, I cannot help but have problems sitting through this one.

The story follows Nana, who is crashing her best friend Lucas’ wedding because she knows the woman he is marrying is a monster (but come on, I love Toadette!) and because she has also discovered that she is madly in love with him. Sure, it’s basic fare, but it’s not the plot that matters sometime, but the execution.

The story is spoken from a tone that is personal not only in the way that it is emotional but in the way that it is sharp, witty and occasionally sarcastic, as if it’s being spoken directly from Nana herself. Nana speaks in the present as she prepares and performs her wedding crash, and in the past as she remembers all the moments between Lucas and herself that she should have noticed showed how much they were meant for each other. That’s what makes it remarkable and relatable; you see yourself in the little moments and the big productions of this story. My personal favorite scene is the one revolving around Lucas’ birthday gift to Nana; it’s something that would really happen.

Even though this is number five on my list and there are fics ahead of it that have a good amount of romance, this is ultimately my favorite romantic fic written on this site. It’s someone’s heart written for the world to see.

6th Best Fanfic of All Time- In Transit by Sequitur

6. In Transit by Sequitur

Section: NCIS
Genre: Tragedy, Angst
Rating: Everyone, although you have to pay attention to feel the full impact
Type: Oneshot, 2000 words
Status: Completed
Completed: October 20, 2005

Starring Characters: Tony DiNozzo, Kate Todd

This is simply one of the smartest, most incredible oneshots I’ve ever read, especially for a section I don’t often read from an author I’ve never met and a story 5 years before my time. I don’t exactly know or remember how I got to this story, but it’s simply an achievement in writing.

There’s not much to the story- DiNozzo is on a plane leaving the Midwest and a passenger on the plane notices his erratic behavior and strikes a conversation with him. But if you’re a fan of the show, the unspoken impact hits you like a train made out of bricks carrying the weight of a world.

Even if you haven’t seen the show, the structure of the story, the wisdom and the words will still be just as remarkable. First off, the story is entirely in second person narrative. It’s not some random passenger on an airplane, it’s you. And second person narrative rarely works right but here it makes the story so much more personal than a third person or a first person would have.

"What I always loved about airplanes is the meaningful relationship you form with the person sitting next to you." He seems to have forgotten his tea and the glass is sweating into his hand. You watch the water droplet squirm down his wrist. "You can tell them anything. You can lie, if you want, the way you're lying to me, or you can tell the truth. Whatever." He fixes you with a sharp glance. "Your name isn't Kathy."

You find the magazine at your side. "Sure it is," you say, not looking at him.

"Right," he says, softly, patronizing you. "I was just kidding." Except he wasn't, not even a little. "But. You can say anything. So if you were lying, it wouldn't matter. Because we're never going to see each other again."

The story is poetry in motion without following a poetic structure. You can build up everything that’s going on as if you are the one listening and following along, and here you actually are. That makes it subtly interactive without you doing anything.

Still, the hard impact of the story comes from knowing the show’s storyline and what lead Tony and his companions to the plane in the first place. If you’re really attentive, though, you’ll be able to figure it out yourself. It’s stories like these that are the reason you read, and the reason you become attached to the art of storytelling on a personal level.

7th Best Fanfic of All Time- The Game by MouseMaster42

7. The Game by MouseMaster42

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Friendship, Humor, Romance, occasional Thriller
Rating: Usually for everyone- Mouse deliberately avoids even the slightest of language but some of the romance may be a tad too heavy.
Type: Episodical fic, 40 episodes, 139,000 words
Status: In progress
Started: January 11, 2011 (1-11-11)

Starring Characters: Marth, Ike, Zelda, Sheik, Samus, Link, Roy, Red, Pit, OC Nya, OC Dr. Stoelhart

You ever watch one of teen shows on Nickelodeon, Disney or anywhere else and bury your head in your hands because they’re so clueless? So many stereotypes and clichés- there’s always the lame friend who’s socially inept, the best friend of the main character who secretly loves him/her and will eventually start dating the main, every man who dates the main character is a total cheating d-bag (unless the main is a man, because we can’t have cheating women on that kind of TV), there’s a wackadoodle Tshirt, and every single other character is a stereotype. It’s clear that the people who create these shows almost always have NO idea what teens like or are like without having to bump it to a TV14 rating and STILL not do it right.
I really wish MouseMaster could write one of those shows for real life.

Until then, though, we have The Game, which is not so much a fanfic as it is an TV show in writing. And it’s like “Lo and behold she did it right!” And it’s true- Mouse creates a show with young adult smashers (some ages have been slightly modified but it’s not like she made Ganon a teen so) that is entertaining, funny and engaging while being entirely real. You can’t trace any of the characters to a real stereotype- they’re fleshed out with different assets of their personality shown at different places.

Okay, I know that I usually have quotes that represent the story here, but it is near impossible; no, impossible, to go into a 40 episode fic and find one defining quote. Just read the dang story! XD

As for clichés, there are admittedly a few, typically concerning romance, but they’re integrated subtly enough and sparsely enough that it’s not much to complain about. She does handle the romance quite nicely as well- instead of the sudden, unrefined rush that the TV shows harbor, she takes things slowly and when things happen, they’re quite poignant.

But The Game as an entire TV show in all facets is quite simply a lot of fun. There’s rascally escapades of some irresponsible behavior, but it’s not as deprecating on teenkind as TV usually has it. There’s those nice days where all the friends have a good time, and you enjoy their interactions and how well she manages more than ten active characters. And most powerfully of all, occasionally there is a serious arc where it looks like things are taking a turn for the worst. It keeps a bit of weight on the fluff and in and of themselves are truly thrilling and keep your attention from beginning to end. It’s a versatile, lovable show that you grow to enjoy like a true TV show, only better.

Also, it should be noted that Mousey has the best fan interaction I’ve seen, replying to every review with a thank you and a sentence or two to answer their questions or just talk with them. Mouse is definitely a voice for her generation and has talents that could make her a leader for youth everywhere, even in something as subtly engaging as this.

8th Best Fanfics Of All Time- I Will Never Forget by TrueToBeBlue and While You Were Asleep by Araceli L

Yes, there is another tie, ladies and gentlemen. I suppose this warrants mentioning that since I started this list two new fics left such an impact during the creathttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifion of this list that I had to include them. The first of these was Tealfrog's story, The Motley Band Crew, at number 10. It didn't help that it took me awhile to decide the top 10 to begin with, so I have another new fic further down the list. To make up for it, I declared another tie between two fics here at eight, and rest assured I love these both equally, and they are large influences on the way I write today.

Here's the first of these!

8a. I Will Never Forget by TrueToBeBlue

Section: Mario
Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, Romance, Drama
Rating: Everyone- only one semi-mature reference and it will fly over younger readers' heads.
Type: Oneshot, 3,000 words
Status: Completed
Finished On: January 16, 2010

Starring Characters: Mario, Rosalina

Description: During the celebration of the galaxy's rescue by Mario, only one notable guest is absent. Mario finds her and engages in a conversation that transcends what will happen after he is gone.

Review: It's incredibly impressive when a story is successful when nothing actually happens, and often I love to read these or attempt these. Between the start of this story and the end of this story, you can't really say anything changed except the thoughts of one of the characters. But it works. And it's amazing.

TrueToBeBlue (formerly Jake-X) brings a terrific, albeit unhappy, point in the Mario Galaxy storyline and universe, and explains it through Mario and Rosalina in an understated, beautiful way. The main idea is that Rosalina is afraid of attending the celebration of the galaxy's rescue because she fears she will get acquainted or friendly with the others here. This would be hard on her, as she is only on Earth once every hundred years (although I suppose Mario Kart excuses this. :P)

What I really took away from this at the surface is how perfectly Mario is interpreted. I'm not one to toss around the word perfect very much, but this was perfect, it really was. In a sea of Italian stereotypes and talk-a like-a this-a Mario presumptions, True brings forth an idealistic, friendly, comforting, caring and somewhat cocky adventurer with a kind, daring spirit. That's exactly what Mario should be like, not "Holy Meatballs Pesto Marinara Pasta Lotsa Spaghetti Am I Italian Enough Yet?" I must admit my own Mario fics take more than enough influence from this story. It's incredible.

"Mario, I know you mean well, and I do believe in what you say. I meant what I said when I said I trusted you more than anyone."

"Then why don't you believe me?"

There was no reply.

"Rosalina?"

"I do believe you Mario. Truly I do."

"Then why did you say otherwise?"

"…I am afraid."

And what else I really love about this story is just the underlying emotion that it takes a bit to identify with but you can see in real life. I've recognized that when Mario tries to tell Rosalina about what a help she was that it sounds like my own conversations with a friend who doesn't know how great she is. You can see Mario trying to convince Rosalina that she will never be forgotten, and a lot of the story's beauty lies in that. Because sometime love isn't proven by a kiss or a flower, but in what you'd do for them. And that's what makes this a true love story.

8b. While You Were Asleep by Araceli L

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Angst, Romance
Rating: 12+ For subtle sexual references- never explicit but the theme of the story is about lust
Type: Oneshot, 1700 Words
Status: Finished
Completed: February 10, 2011

Starring Characters: Marth, Zelda

Description: Marth makes a decision about the painful, manipulative love between him and Zelda and finds his own power at last.

Review: What is, and has always been, Araceli L's best attribute and what makes her one of the best authors on the site (and one of the very few whose new stories I consistently read) is that in every story is the complete humanity of every character and every narrative. She becomes the characters, delving into their psyche and creating their thoughts, their positions, their ways, and then uses them to create the story. And I believe that her story that takes influence from OK Go's While You Were Asleep is perhaps her best example.

Dearest Zelda, whom of us does not know your secret?

Yet even though your hidden desire is buried so deeply within your heart, it shines through your eyes as brightly as your smile. I am not the fool you take me to be.

I am not a fool – but it is easier to pretend I am.

I listen to your serene, peaceful breaths – but they lack in reassurance also. I cannot seem to chase away my insomnia under the stillness of the sparkling sky, under the influence of your whispering breaths. For some reason they mesmerize me, paralyze me – just as you do.

Just as you do.

But I can bear it no longer. What has come over me lately, you might be wondering; my dear, I cannot tell you. I can't answer your despairing face – for you have never answered mine.

This is a fair trade, no?

The story follows Marth, in a narrative to his sleeping lover, as he quietly takes the power at long last. I liken this story to a perfectly tended song. The meek tone gaining its power flows into the beautiful, graceful words he tells his lover which flows into the physical surroundings which flows into the plot itself. It is all universal and interconnected, and creates a beautiful symphony.

And you feel for Marth, even if this goes over your head or you've never been in his position, because he lays his soul bare and Araceli uses it to construct his escape and his renewal. The character is intricate and you can tell she creates them from her sources, staying faithful even when the character is not doing things like he or she normally does. That's masterful, understated writing by someone who is faithful to her work.

Again, this is just an example of one of many works that she has successfully created. I had a hard time finding her best work, but what prompted me to pick this one was that I had read it several times, and it didn't hit me until three readings how well this was done, and more importantly, how much it influenced my work. It was truly a big influence on the philosophical and emotional writing I did later on. And she calls me a big influence on her. ;)

So that's the top 8s. I have the top 7 organized in my notebook and most likely the order will not change. They should be up pretty soon, as it's about time I finished. Also, I'll think about throwing in three more fics above the 20 and possibly expanding this to a top 25, for more officialness.

Cheers!

9th Best Fanfic Of All Time-Canary On A Landmine by kyouji kanji

9. Canary On A Landmine by kyouji-kanji

Section: In Plain Sight
Genre: Crime Adventure
Rating: Ten plus, for some language and action that isn't that explicit.
Type: Chapter Fics
Status: Complete, 25 Chapters and 50,000 words.
Finished On: April 8th, 2011

Starring Characters: Mary Shannon, Marshall Mann, OC Isabelle Manning

It's incredibly hard, as I've mentioned, to do a story with the characters in character when they're off a TV show. They're developed in, at times, more than fifty hours of TV episodes. It's even harder when it's from a show that focuses on developing the characters, like In Plain Sight does. It's extremely hard, in this case, to capture the overall feel that the TV show does.

Kyouji-kanji's Canary on a Landmine succeeds that, and that's what makes it such a triumph.

I'm astonished how in character everyone is, and how in character the story is to the show. It's absolutely remarkable. It's literally like reading an episode of the show. It's a shame that they're cancelling In Plain Sight because Kyouji could write for it very well.

"We're going away from the commercial flights because they're hard to secure. We have a Gulfstream 150 waiting for us at the far side of the airport and that will take us straight through to Denver. We're going to be with you all the way there and we aren't going to let anything happen to you. Okay?" [Marshall explained.]

She nodded, finally finding her voice. "Thank you."

"No worries, we aim to please…"

Mary gave a slightly derisive short. "We aim not to miss," she muttered under her breath, then added aloud, "There they are."

Mary sat up straight once again scanning the area.

The story itself is well done and original. The premise is that Mary and Marshall, being the grand Witness Protection agents that they are, are taking a witness across the nation to Denver, but as predicted, things go awry as people start hunting them down. What really cinches the story as original as it turns out is what is perhaps the greatest use of starring Original Character ever, the enigmatic Isabelle Manning, who is the cause of most of the plot twists. A few chapters in we find that

SPOILER ALERT
Isabelle Manning isn't really Isabelle Manning, special agent, she's a close friend, also a special agent, in cognito as her, and she does this kind of disguise work a lot. This allows her true character to show through, and it's a blessing. The fake Isabelle, nicknamed "Isn't", is one of the most entertaining characters I've seen in a long time, holding up to the wit and character of Mary and Marshall.
End Spoiler Alert.

All in all, this story is pulled off magnificently, and it's a great read. There are a few grammar and spelling errors (points to the title on Fanfiction) but this is one of the most engaging and entertaining works I've read in a long time, and I'm glad I followed it. Now if only Kyouji would work on the sequel some more...

BONUS- Psst, click me, Kyouji...

Just Throwin My List 10 Characters And Do Stuff With 'Em Here

LIST YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS (OCs count) AND ACT AS IF YOU WERE ACTUALLY IN THE GAME. Now I'm not necessarily gonna list the same characters as last time, but some more faves nonetheless. Not in any order. Game characters only. Gave a description for those you may not know.

1. Snake (Metal Gear Solid series)

2. Hawke (Advance Wars Series)

Description for the Obscure: A serious, unemotional war commander of the dark forces of the Black Hole who is shrouded in mystery. Not going for Paradigms version.

3. Strings (OCish type person from Strings, my fanfic, but not quite an OC)

Description for the Obscure: A coy, frank woman suffering from total memory loss. Excellent harpist.

4. Rosalina (Super Mario Galaxy series)

Probably less necessary description for the obscure: A wise, kind woman of many centuries who learned how to create the galaxies through the help of the Lumas.

5. Luigi (Mario Bros. Series)

6. Melanthe, Chief of the Yoshi Tribe (Mario and Yoshi Series)

Description for the Obscure: Not so much an OC as a creative interpretation of the main character Yoshi. I should totally upload my sketch of her. She's a jovial, fiery and offbeat 40+ year old leader of her modern tribe's island who is a self-declared godmother of Mario and Luigi.

7. Mario (Gee I wonder)

8. Falco Lombardi (Star Fox)

9. Lash (Advance Wars series)

Description for the Obscure: A selfish, clever genius inventor/commander for the Black Hole army and closest thing to an ally for Hawke. Has a bratty, youthful personality and is somewhat twistedly upbeat.

10. Nana (Ice Climbers- thanks to Layla)

Description for the Obscure: Nana is interesting; she has no actual characterizations courtesy of Nintendo but I like what people on Fanfiction have done with her; namely Layla Kagamire with Speak Now, where she is a self-conscious, clever idealist. Kind of how I'd see her, really. There's also the Nana from my own Paradigms where she's an outgoing, steady-minded teenager. I'm going for an eclectic mix of the both of them.

In retrospect, this would be a great fanfic.

Then ask the following questions~

What would you do if Number 1 woke you up in the middle of the night

Well, if someone with the common sense and no-nonsense woke me up in the middle of the night, I'd have to assume something was going down and that I need to be prepared to take drastic measures.

Number 3 walked into the bathroom while you're showering?

The curtain's closed. God, some people just have to use the bathroom. She knocked, at least.

Number 4 announced he/she's going to marry 9 tomorrow?

Whoa nelly, there. Rosalina, the demure, wise centuries-old woman marrying the most insane, manaical, madcap, eternally out-there woman in possible existance since Abby Scuito... tomorrow?

I... really got nothing to say... good luck?

Number 5 cooked you dinner?

Luigi strikes me as a really good cook. Can't say what it is, but he strikes me as an excellent chef. I'd be looking forward to it.

Number 6 was lying next to you on the beach, sleeping?

Hah! Melanthe, She's a fiery conversant. Seeing as laying in the sand in the beach strikes as epic conversation time, I'd imagine she tuckered herself out. I'd probably get a little beach towel thingy and cover her up and leave after making sure she doesn't have sand in her spiky hair. XD

Number 7 suddenly confessed to be part of your family?

Great, another person to be overshadowed by his celebrity relative. *is shot*

Nah. There's no one as smart, streetwise and with tales to tell from his many travels as there is Mario. You won't get as good an uncle as that anywhere else.

Number 8 got into the hospital somehow?

...who the hell'd you punch? >_X

Number 9 made fun of your friends?

Okay, really, do you expect anything less? It's Lash.

Number 10 ignored you all the time?

With someone like Nana, if she's ignoring you, she's feeling down. So I confront her kindly. Ask her what's wrong, and let it go from there.

Two serial killers are hunting you down. What will 1 do?

It's effing Snake. Dude. Thank you.

He'd probably pass me a gun, cos he's cool like that, and we'll both confront them together. He'll glare at me when I turn the gun sideways. I won't pay it heed. XD

You're on a vacation with 2 and manage to break your leg. What does 2 do?

To make up for giving me Snake as killer fighting material, you give me Hawke as a response to me breaking my leg.

...sorry, this whole question is invalid. Hawke's not going on vacation, like, ever.

It's your birthday. What does 3 get you?

When I say Strings is crafty... I mean she's the type of person who will construct something by herself with no regard to how bad it turns out. I'd accept a barely-glued together collage to top my print-out story works anyday with a smile and a hug.

You're stuck in a house that's on fire. What does 4 do?

I can't see Rosalina as the type of person who partakes in much direct action, but she's smart. She'd probably coordinate a rescue effort masterfully, as good as if she was the one there.

You're about to do something that'll make you feel extremely embarrassed. What will 5 do?

Luigi knows embarrassment. He'd pat me on the back and give me a slight grin, telling me I have nothing to lose. And hell, if this guy has been embarrassed and still has it quite good, then I may as well go for it.

You're about to marry number 10. What's 1's reaction:

I'm about to marry Nana?

Hehe. :P

Well, Snake's not big on matters of the heart; experienced, but no idealist (like this Nana person XD) so he'd give me a customary congrats and I'd give him the invitation. If guys do that. Really I haven't the foggiest. Lmfao

You got dumped by someone. How will 7 cheer you up?

Mario? Hah, Mario's probably the cleverest out of all of them. He won't try and drown me with life lessons or pity; he'll apologize and then let me do something stress-relieving. Like target practice. Taking into account that being surrounded by 10 really smart, strong and resourceful people can't make me at least a bit good at stuff like that.

You compete in a tournament. How does 9 support you?

"Ah, come on! It's not like you can suck that bad! Teeheehee!"

"Gee, thanks, Lash."

You can't stop laughing. What will 10 do?

Start randomly laughing with me right out of nowhere. Can't help it. Laughter's contagious.

Number 1 is all you've ever dreamed of. Why?

Well, I didn't stop bugging him, and I asked for his life story. Really, I should have known better. I'm a bit sheltered, so if I had a huge firsthand account from something actually happening, I'd have some kind or sordid dreams when it's not keeping me up at night. I'd learn something from it, though.

Number 2 tells you about his/her deeply hidden love for number 9.

Haha! Coincidental playing into the canon!

I could actually see this; Lash is really the only one who, the whole time, didn't ditch Hawke or hate him. And I've heard loners fall in love easier.

I tell him that he's gonna have to accept that he is a human and to go for it.

You're dating 3 and he/she introduces you to her parents. Would you get along?

Sorry, wrong question. Strings doesn't know who her parents are. Remember?

Will number 5 and 6 ever kiss?

Like a mother pecking her godson on the forehead and then chuckling at the 28 year old man's reaction kind of kiss.

Number 6 appears to be a player, breaking many hearts. What do you do?

Sorry. It's called being a politician. *is shot*

You had a haircut and 7 can't stop looking at you. What goes on in your mind?

He wishes he could do with his hair what crazy stuff I do with mine.

Number 8 thinks he/she’ll never get a girl/boyfriend. What will you tell him/her?

Falco? Bah, it's interesting that he cares about that. But, really? I tell him that if there isn't a damn soul on this earth who isn't looking for a charmingly snarky daredevil who's a lot of fun, then there aren't that many chicks in this earth (hehe pun.)

Number 9 is too shy to face you and confesses their love by sending an email. Now what?

So that explains the mocking... and the moodiness... and the... wait that's all Lash.

What I'd do with any girl- I talk to her in person and see how it goes from there. I must be something to make Lash shy. XD This is why this is called 'fiction.' :awe:

You spot 10 kissing 1. How do you react?

Okay...

Idealist little Nana tries to comfort stern, downbeat soldier in a bad mood. Does not turn out well. Snake's a bit bugged and Nana's wondering what the hell she did.

Me? I acknowledge my presence. That's like the subtlest way to say "Holy sh*t, stop."

You notice that 3 and 4 have been inside that hotel room for MORE than a few hours. What are you thinking?

Rosalina has millenia and millenia of tales to tell.

Strings hasn't a single memory older than a few years. Sometimes she just needs a bit of reassurance and stuff.

potentially sexual situation response... dodged*

Could 1 and 6 be soul mates?

Snake and Mel? Hehe... I think their souls would align very well. Kind of like mixing the blue and the yellow in the paint and creating green. Although this case pale blue and vivid green.

Would 2 trust 5?

Hawke? Trust?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Number 4 is bored and pokes 10. What happens after that?

Now, an idealist like Nana sees someone so composed and sage as Rosalina poking her and she can't help but have fun with it. Pretty soon Nana's into bugging Rosalina mindlessly with a barrage of pokes when Rosalina only intended to do it once. Turnabout's fair play.

5 and 1 are forced to go back to school together. What study will they pick?

Studies on cooking and perhaps for him some sketching. Strikes me as a sketch artist, Snake does.

If 6 and 3 cooked dinner what would they make?

When you get someone as subdued as Strings and as boisterous as Mel and have them try and make dinner, what do you get?

A pizza.

And a fire extinguisher.

And in the midst of a fight.

7 and 9 apply for a job. What job?

Lash applies for an invention job for her... and... why Mario?

Oh... cos she needs a lab rat. Tsk, tsk, Mar, you need to know when to say no. o.o

8 gives 5 a haircut. Is that okay?

Well, I imagine Falco must be good at grooming. Kind of pointless since Luigi has the hat though.

9 sketches what 6's perfect girl/boyfriend should look like; will 6 be happy?

Lash sketches something that looks like a six year old's composition of a man.

Melanthe is genuinely happy with it.

10 and 9 are blushing while they talk. What is their conversation about?

I dunno... but I walk by very slowly and teasingly. I just had to take advantage of this.

1 accidentally kicked 10?

Nana. Tsk, tsk. You should know to stay away from Snake when he's training. What are you gonna, kiss him again?

christ, I was kidding! Jee, I'm sorry.

2 sent a message to his/her Bf/Gf but 9 got it. What would happen?

Nothing spectacular; his girlfriend got his message after all.

5 and 6 did a workout together?

Melanthe would be outdoing him on the weights. Eff what Super Mario 64 DS says, the Yoshi tribe is a strong race.

6 noticed he/she wasn't invited to your birthday?

I thought she was busy... damn. She'd have been the life of the party. Hope she'll accept an improptu invitation on the back of a napkin. XD

7 won the lottery?

Does he really need all those coins? Nah, Mario'd probably do some big donation.

8 had quite a big secret?

...we all know you can't really fly.

9 became a singer?

All those years singing along to Rise Against paid off!

10 got a daughter?

Hey, Nana. Don't worry, teen pregnancy happens. O.o

(Gonna end this here.)

What would 1 think of 2?

I see a lot of similarities between the both of them, only even Snake isn't that hardened.

How would 3 greet 4?

"Hello there, memory woman." With a slight smile, too.

What would 4 envy about 5?

The fact that he can stay on earth with his special one. Maybe that he has a special one?

What dream would 5 have about 6?

Probably some good kind of memory of when he was a kid and Mel totally saved his ass.

What do 6 and 7 have in common?

They've both fought Bowser.

What would make 7 angry at 8?

Falco's got an arsenal of wisecracks. Mario's a straight shooter. It's grating after awhile.

Where would 8 meet 9?

At some rock club somewhere. She's singing loudly, he's laughing loudly.

What would 9 never dare to tell 10?

Nana's an idealist. Lash'd stave from telling about all the times she killed people with her lazarz.

What would make 10 scared of 1?

He's a soldier? He kicked her?

Is 3 Gay?

She doesn't know, really.

How do you feel right now?

I indulged myself. I'm kind of grinning. XD

My VMA Predictions and Hopes-BEST ROCK VIDEO

Hello, all! I figured today would be an opportune time to try some critique, and with the VMAs rolling around, I figure that'd be a good place to start.

If a music video's good, I'll know it, and I'll treasure it and its song that much more. Music videos are the opportune way to tell a succint story through your music, making it that much better when you have visuals behind it. And the VMAs are therefore a celebration show I actually like to watch, especially coupled with unforgettable performances.

I'm going to tackle a few notable awards today and not the nitpickier ones, so don't expect the technical reviews.

Let's start with one of my favorites- rock and roll!

BEST ROCK VIDEO
The Black Keys-Howlin' For You
Foo Fighters-Walk
Foster The People-Pumped Up Kicks
Cage the Elephant-Shake Me Down
Mumford and Sons-The Cave

Now let me just say, these are all excellent videos. They all are true art, in one form or another. I'll quickly tackle these one by one.

The Black Keys- this is probably the most entertaining video. It consists of a mock trailer for a movie with the same name as the title. It's humorous and intriguing, albeit pretty... how to say... spicy. However, there is a large weakness in this one and that is that it does not give the song a spotlight. In fact, the music is simply background music- if this were a real trailer, I'd maybe look the music up later. It should make you notice the song, and that's what hinders it. But, overall, it feels like a real movie, and it's cool to see.

Foo Fighters- Those who have been cinema fans through the nineties (read-my parents) will figure out that this video is recreating the 1993 Michael Douglass movie Falling Down. Starring lead singer Dave Grohl as an angry working class man who leaves his car in the middle of a jammed freeway and lashes out at the normal elements of his boring life, this video is all at once humorous, empowering, and in good heart. Grohl does a genuinely good job at acting, and the story is its strength- during the section where the song belts out "I NEVER WANNA DIE!" it truly is empowering despite the goofy scene it takes place in. And that's a point in itself- it promotes the song, and I've grown to love Walk because of the video, and that's an accomplishment. The idea is, obviously, not an original, but it is well done and quite a step up from their previous video from their album Rope.

Foster the People- I absolutely love this song. It's sparse, chilling and twistedly upbeat, and casually tells a story of teen gun violence. With all that in mind, you'd think that there'd be plenty of material for a video. Unfortunately, they don't take advantage of the song's material, and instead they go with a common 'band touring' video, which has been done many times. Now don't get me wrong, the cinematography is great, but it's opportunity missed. It goes well with the upbeat nature, but I can't possibly be the only one who thinks it unfitting that a teen violence warning song goes with shots of the band chilling. All in all, though, it's a likable showcase of a great new band.

Cage the Elephant I have heard this song on occasions but was never hooked to it, but watching it with the video made me love it, and that's what a music video should do. While the video doesn't stand out as much as some of the bombastic videos of the bunch, it's a calm, emotional trip of a worn man in his fifties traveling back to his childhood in one way or another. To be honest, it's a bit trippy and the story's hard to follow, but the cinematography is great, the silent emotion is there, and you truly feel the song and the video, they just mesh together as if that was the way it's supposed to be. And that's quite magical.

Mumford and Sons Mumford and Sons deserve every ounce of love they get- they truly are the best at what they do. And the music video is retrospective and it does fit with the song quite well, although is a step down from Cage in that manner. What really makes this video is the cinematography- it's a catching video with many gorgeous, scenic shots that do help the song and keep your attention. The story is simple and interesting- the members of Mumford and Sons give their instruments to uniformed soldiers on the Eastern side of the world [don't quote me on that], and the soldiers 'sing' for the video as the band rides motorbikes through the nearby area. It's simple, fresh, and quite beautiful.

Who will probably win: To take into account the viewers of the videos and show, you have to get into their minds. Videos like Howlin' For You instantly register in the viewers' minds, and the video Walk has a memorable storyline and memorable moments. Take into account the simplicity of Pumped Up Kicks, and that could be an advantage- however, there isn't much to the video to give it an advantage over the rest. Music is a large part of the video, and with The Cave being the most identifiable, that could give it a huge boost. And Shake Me Down will pull on your heartstrings subtly, with a great song to boot.

I'm going to say, however, that The Cave will probably take the prize. Not only does it have a well known and critically acclaimed song, it has a stunning video to boot, and that will draw viewers in.

My Pick: Now, that's not to say that is my pick. In my opinion, taking my reviews to account, I have a different video in mind. I came into here ready to pick Walk, and even with tough competition, I still think that Foo Fighters' Walk is my pick to win. The story is entertaining, the song compliments it, and every time it comes on, I willingly watch it. That's exactly what a video should do.

In short

Predicted to win: Mumford and Sons-The Cave
My pick to win: Foo Fighters-Walk

Tomorrow, I will tackle Best Female Video, and will close out the seven categories with the customary BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR review. Stay tuned!

10th Best Fanfics I've Ever Read-The Unofficial Farces of Evil Series by The Stupendous Jimbo and The Motley Band Crew by Tealfrog26

Okay, for this one I'm going to do something entirely crazy, for an unprecedented reason. I'm going to do two best fanfics.

Now there's a reason for this, and it's flimsy. In between the list's creation, I've found a fic that is definitely in my top ten, and I can't discard it. However, I cannot completely discard any of the other fics that are in my top ten- all of them, eleven now, are magnificent.

So for 10th place I have declared a tie between two fics. I'll go ahead and present the original tenth first.

10a. Farces of Evil: The Stupendous Jimbo's Guides to the Best Fanfic Advice Ever

Latest Update: All are oneshots, and made on his whim

Before I go into detail, I should explain myself. You've probably noticed that I've linked you to Jimbo's profile, not story. And that there's not even a story called the title that I put up there. Well, here's the deal.

Jimbo's written several different fanfics on the subject of the vices/taboo of fanfiction works, based in Super Smash Bros. While he has some serious work worth noting, one look at any of these will let you in on the secret: Jimbo is THE king of humor in the Smash Bros section, no questions asked. And pretty much 75% of his work are those farces, so they're easy to find.

Also, I made up the name.

Now onto the review.

As you may have seen, not everyone is exactly, erm, skillful in Fanfiction. There are stories that are pure self-indulgence, and it gets annoying. Stupendous Jimbo knows this better than anyone, and he'll let you know exactly what he 'thinks' about it- they're great!

Well, in a way. Great for his farce material. You will spend so much time sitting, laughing hysterically, and identifying those moments/ideas that make no sense. From learning how to flame like the pros in "The Stupendous Jimbo's Guide to Stupendous Flaming," Those people who cry out for attention in "IT'S CALLED FANFICTION!", self-indulgent and self-insertive original characters in OH MY GOD I NEED OCs, and my personal favorite, Oh look, Another Stupid Truth or Dare Story, which tackles those who the hell came up with this idea ToDs.

I'll focus on that one.

The green clad man gave a small sigh. "I understand," he said. Zelda gave Link a peck on the cheek and said, with a smile, "don't worry, you'll find the right girl, and she'll be more lucky than anybody in the world."

Captain Falcon tilted his head in Zelda's direction and muttered "yet you don't want to be that lucky girl."

"Captain Falcon shut up! This is none of your business," Zelda screamed.

"Yeah well if you haven't noticed, you guys have been calling me rude but you've yet to realize I'm trying to watch the race in peace and you three won't leave me alone! So until you get the message you're unwanted, I'm now in official contributor to this conversation!

Peach gave a subtle scoff topped with a cold glare. "And what resilient contribution do you have to offer?"

"First of all, Link, give it up, it's not gonna happen. You have a better chance of going to the romance section of Super Smash Bros. on fanfiction and finding a story that does NOT include a gay pairing. Second of all, Zelda, seriously, Link is the only guy who won't dump you after you sleep with him...Think about it…And last, Peach, do you even know what 'resilient' means?"

You just laughed. A lot.

The story stars Captain Falcon, the frank, brash force in the world of high school drama-esque Smash Mansion, where every other character acts like they're stereotypical insultive to teen highschoolers, which happens A LOT. It's an absolute joy to see Falcon just calling BS on all the story elements that are dismissed as normal a lot. The Truth Or Dare element is short, but it's awegasmic to see Falcon completely tearing down the walls of BS built up in the smasher's lives and the stories that are like that. It was just a moment of "YES! YES! YES!" Just like M Bison.

Long story short, Jimbo says what needs to be said in a way where he doesn't directly say what needs to be said. Enjoy.

10b. The Motley Band Crew by Tealfrog26

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Humor, Angst, Drama, Dark Comedy
Rating: Late Teen, for pervasive language mostly from one person, drug use, potentially offensive humor, and innuendo
Type: Serial Fic
Status: 4 Chapters In, 12,500 words
Latest Update: July 13, 2011

It took awhile for this fic to truly hit home in my mind, but when it did, I was moved.

This story by a newer writer who doesn't know how great they are. It focuses on Mr. Game and Watch, who, after an out of control series of events, is ousted from the Smash Bros Tournament and forced to live in a crappy garden shed. With the help of the less popular characters, gloriously OOC foulmouthed Olimar, drastically upbeat Yoshi, confused, troubled ROB and drug-addled and unprofessional Dr. Mario, he starts the "Motley Band Crew", a group dedicated to doing good in the world, with the double entende of helping the emotionless Game and Watch truly feel.

WARNING: THE BELOW EXCERPT IS VERY EXPLICIT. VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

"The Motley Band Crew." Mr. Game and Watch declared, rather despondently. Mr. Game and Watch stood in a two room shed with Captain Olimar, Rob, Yoshi and Dr. Mario, forming a ring around a small soap box in the center. It was being used as a table and held a file with some papers sticking out. Yoshi had brought it in. The room was completely empty otherwise; the floor and walls were bare wooden planks. Through the door to Game and Watch's left was a bed, a mini fridge and an old black and white antennae based television.

"No, the Fuck Ass Dicks Gang," Captain Olimar said behind the small soap box, "It makes us sound more badass."

"We're here to help people, not…do that," Yoshi reasoned.

"Don't be a pussy Yoshi," Olimar said as he slapped the green dinosaur in the knee cap. Olimar could not reach his head due to his height. "The Fuck Ass Dicks Gang is beast!"

Game and Watch shook his head. "No, that sounds like we want to screw them in the ass. As a collective gang."

"With our dicks," Dr. Mario added.

This story is definitely a comedy, but it is shockingly poignant. From the first lines, you laugh a lot, but you also grow fond of the ousted Mr. Game and Watch and you feel for him. There are many intentionally offensive elements, and those with a thin skin will be up in arms. But the characters are truer than you'd think- even the complete douchebag Olimar has a familiar aura about him. And that's the beauty of it. Tealfrog was inspired by real life people at their best and worst and put elements of realism in every character that if you blink, you'd miss.

You also grow to appreciate the little elements, like the somewhat out of place exquisite prose of the narration and dialogue, and the little characteristics of the characters- naive Nana's pride in her french fries, Luigi's occasional gruff "hello" to Game and Watch when he's not insanely drunk, Rob's uncontrollable of announcing silently every time a taxi passes by- there's just the little moments that strike a chord because they're identifiable and real. It's shockingly beautiful.

My favorite touch? At the end of all chapters except for the first, a character, primarily Game and Watch, ends the chapter with a defeated "F**k." It brings a painful, poignant pang that closes it out quite well.

Really, this story's unlike nothing you've ever read.

11th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read-Royal Survivor: Stars by Mindblower

11. Royal Survivor: Stars by Mindblower

Section: Mario
Genre: Reality TV Game Show
Rating: 7+- a mostly clean story, with occasional censored language and intense scenes.
Type: TV Show Format
Status: Twelve Episodes In, 95,000 Words
Latest Update: April 23, 2011

Starring Characters: An assortment of the most famous Mario series characters, including two OCs as reps of two Koopa Species.

Description: In an original remastering of the Survivor system, Mindblower creates a game show for the most famous characters of the Mario series.

Review: 99% of the time, if you see a reality TV show based fic... it sucks. Sorry, but usually it does, and at the best is forgettable. With the exception of the above mentioned Amazing Race: Dreamland, though, this is perhaps the most intelligent, most realistic and enjoyable without being a guilty pleasure.

There are two things that make this a great experience. One is that everyone is IN CHARACTER, with one exception. (The one exception is huge, noticable, but intended, so it passes.) You don't have blatant overreactions and using Mario characters as vessels for your own stereotypes, you have the actual characters, and that's pretty much an auto-win for me. In fact, the characters are very enjoyable- her OC Bro Mamma, my pick to win, is a ton of fun to read about and frankly should get her own fic. Mindblower even explores and fleshes out what is already there- the intelligent Bowser is more IC, in my opinion, than typical fanfics and is pretty much the archetype I imagined him to be/ plan to base him off of in upcoming fics.

Jeff met the Hero tribe on the dark side of the island. He handed each member a torch. "Fire represents life. If your torch goes out, so do you.

"Each of you will write a name down on a peace of paper, the name of the person you want most to go home. This person does not have to be the weakest. Keep in mind, throughout the game, that there can only be one Royal Survivor."

The second thing that makes this successful is that Mindblower creates an original Survivor system, called Royal Survivor, hence the name. Whilst Inspector Brown created an unique world, Mindblower creates original rules, almost entirely dissimilar to Survivor but feels entirely like a Survivor fic anyways. I can't name all the changes (the first chapter has a good introduction), but the most notable include coin challenges, regular auctions, and all three teams living on the same island and therefore interacting.

Perhaps the strongest point, however, is that Mindblower takes full advantage of being in control of the show (something that, presumably, reality TV shows are not) and therefore creates great scenes, moments, twists, ideas, interactions and other such things, making sure that you stay tuned for the next chapter.

Overall, a story that breaks the trend of bad Survivor stories and creates a stakehold and sets an example for its successors.

12th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read-Fluff and Circumstance/Happenstance or All By Spontaneity by Ze Dybbuk

12. Fluff and Circumstance or All By Spontaneity by Ze Dybbuk

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Crack Humor, Romance
Rating: Older Teen for some pretty nauseating detail, crude language, potentially offensive humor and innuendo
Type: Short Story
Status: Complete, 5 Chapters, 25,000 Words
Finished: December 6, 2010

Starring Characters: Pit, Ike, Samus, Pikachu, Link

Description: In the sequel to Fluff and Circumstance: The Cult of Ario, the uncouth, deadpan Ike 'Fatty' Greil is thrown into a quandary by his criminally insane metaphorical tumor of a 'friend,' Pit, when he declares to him his love for she-devil Samus Aran, and dragged on a madcap adventure to help him get the girl, and get off his back.

Review: When you finish reading All By Spontaneity, a critically beloved crackfic by the slightly insane Ze Dybbuk, you will feel many things. Among them would be nauseated, confounded, and a pain in your throat from all the raw laughter. Ze Dybbuk pulls no punches with her (right? her?) zany crackfic, or, a humorous fic with many unrealistic and random elements. You will get many icky details about what a slob Ike is or what a psycho Pit is, but you accept it and laugh because of it.

' "Fatty!" Pit barked, snapping his fingers and gesturing for Ike to get his bum ass off their nasty couch. "You're gonna help me with somethin', mmkay?"

Ike swatted a rogue Cheetoh off his knee. With the level of dignity that can only follow an action such as this, he replied, "No." '

It's not driven by gross humor alone- the real star is the priceless dialogue between the frankly patronizing Pit and the pissed-off get-the-hell-away-from-me Ike, and the "I'm-almost-breaking-the-fourth-wall-but-not-quite," sarcastic and witty narration of Dybbuk herself. (Watch- I could be completely wrong about the genre and look like a fool. Where did I read her gender again? o.o)

Overall, the bottom line is- the story has priceless, indescribable, signature humor in a style that is entirely traceable to none other than its author. You will laugh your ass off. No other way to put it.

13th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read-Error Code 39 by Kattheamazing

13. Error Code 39 by Kattheamazing

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: Thriller, Horror, Zombie/Possession, Adventure
Rating: Teen for some graphic scenes, language, and intense moments
Type: Full Length Story
Status: Complete, 25 Chapters, 70,000 Words
Finished: January 8, 2011

Starring Characters: All the characters get a sizable role, but perhaps the most prominent is Lucas and Master Hand.

Description: When a deadly, insanity-inducing virus rapidly spreads through the mansion, an all-out war is induced to fight off the virus, and the friends that are possessed it that are attempting to kill the healthy. Who will be infected, and who will remain sane long enough to fight the oncoming nightmare?

Review: This is perhaps the fastest I have ever read a full fic- all 70,000 words were knocked out in about two hours, I was so addicted to this story. And with good reason- Kattheamazing has created a fast-paced, heart pounding, intense, immersing story that rivals many zombie flicks.

The premise is simple- one smasher catches a horrendous virus that drives one mad, into a zombie-like state, and the mansion and all its inhabitants are thrust into a life-or-death Humans vs Zombies story. Simple, basic fare, really. But pulled off with expert precision by Kat.

"An unbearable sick feeling tethered him down. It crushed his lungs, so that every sharp breath he drew in was agony. It caused his stomach to churn, the air around him to freeze, and dizziness to seep into his mind.

I'm going to die."

The story is excellently paced- even though it goes by like a flash, things are slowly revealed. But what will really get you is the amount of action, and the excellence of the action scenes. Let's be honest- usually when you're reading a story you skim the action scenes. However, Kat has accomplished the rare feat of making action scenes not only readable, but enthralling. Damn the fact I'm reading it from a phone, I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of it, tapping my foot and incurring odd glances from the 'rents. I think we were even watching some sort of action show, and all I could focus on was Error Code.

The only weakness mentionable is that while character development is present, it could be increased a tad bit more. But, in reality, this story has a lot more character than most monster flicks, and with vivid, gripping action to boot, Error Code is a worthy, excellent homage to horror thrillers that is actually better than most of them.

14th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read-Second Chance by Skullfox

14. Second Chance by Skullfox

Section: Star Fox
Genre: Psych Thriller, Time Travel, Action, Romance
Rating: Older Teen for violence, language, death thematics, sexual references and nudity.
Type: Full Length Story
Status: Twentyfour Chapters In, 150,000 words
Last Updated: May 21, 2011

Starring Characters: Fox McCloud, Krystal, James, Katt, Fara, Falco, Vivy, Cerinian OC Mahlay

Description: After the entirety of the Star Fox crew meets their death, Fox McCloud immediately awakens in his teen years through a force unknown to him. Determined to correct his mistakes of his past life, prevent the deaths of those close to him and find his true love again, whatever it may take. However, he will learn that fate and time is a tricky thing to mess with...

Review: This is perhaps the most recent entry to my list. After a bored afternoon I decided to look through my friends' favorite lists, and found this and started marathoning it through the next week, and I'm almost finished with what is up so far. And truly, it's remarkable.

The idea of time travel isn't a new topic, but the idea of living your life over again is a pretty fresh take, and Skullfox doesn't squander the potential. He creates an enigmatic story of Fox, a forty year old in his teenage body, trying to make sense of his life after he is forced to start most of it over again after his untimely death. His emotions and pain are detailed, but most notably his undying, unshakable determination to fix all that went wrong in his life. The day he wakes up, he saves his mother from certain death from Andross' bomb.

And although it is slow to build up, every moment counts in this story. Fox learns more about the temperamental tapestry that is time and life, and the story creates a literal alternate universe, where things start to change- with him, those he loves, and the course of his life. The story periodically switches to Krystal's home planet, where a force of evil starts to grow in a young male whose mind starts to corrode under the control of a mystical object, and although it's confusing at the time, it starts to all add together in an intense mid-story climax.

-"Fate

The most laughable concept in history, or something we could never hope to understand? The ideas of fate and destiny have been alive since time itself. People will bend to believe that they are drawn into their decisions by the hand of God or some other unseen force…in this most of them simply try to deal, by blaming these forces for their own mistakes. Perhaps fate does exist, and perhaps it does not, but in the end we only have ourselves to blame..."

There are some problems- the story has the tendency to jump through the progression of time almost randomly, making it hard to follow, and there are some confusing points, but the positives outweigh the negatives, especially later in the story as Skullfox's writing skills increase. It's a long read, but well worth it.

15th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read-Wounded by PitFTW

15. Wounded by PitFTW

Section: Super Smash Bros
Genre: War, Angst, Comfort, Alternate Universe
Rating: Teen for violence, language and emotionally painful scenes.
Type: Full Length Story
Status: Four Chapters In
Last Updated: March 5, 2011

Starring Characters: Link, Mario, Zelda, Ike, Pit

Description: The story takes place in a war zone- our favorite Nintendo characters against the alloys. A look mostly outside the battlefield on the effects of war and death on the soldiers of the war.

Review: PitFTW is probably one of the most legendary authors of the Smash Brothers Section. More than 80 different people have favorited her works all over the sites, and her stories usually have a lot of people flocking to them with rave reviews. For good reason- she's an incredible author. All around, her work is solid, intelligent and remarkable.

Wounded sticks with me because of the frank, painful look it takes on war. You don't see many anti-war stories taking place in a war- at least I don't, but she accomplishes it with raw emotions, deft writing, and immersing detail of the psyche of the soldiers and the events. What is probably the most remarkable part is that she does not preach in the story- she lets the events speak for themselves. And it's truly haunting.

"I used to read about how people would look like they were sleeping peacefully when they died.

Today, I learned that in reality, they don't look like they're sleeping.

They just look dead."

Truly not an easy read- a lot of parts are hard to stomach. But if you are brave, your reward will be great. Wounded is the kind of story that leads by example, and you are drawn to follow.

Unfortunately, work has been delayed for four months, but hopefully with some projects nearly out of the way she will resume work on her brilliant fic.

16th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read: View of the Sapphire Sea by GenericDude

16. View of the Sapphire Sea by GenericDude

Section: Kirby
Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Romance
Rating: 10+ For thematics and thoughts about death
Type: Oneshot, 3200 Words
Status: Finished
Completed: March 27, 2011

Starring Characters: Meta Knight, Tiff

Description: An insomnia ridden Meta Knight seeks solace during the night at his favourite location, when a certain girl appears to offer her comfort.

Review: I had first heard of GenericDude when I first started out reading in the Advance Wars section, back when Fanfiction was classified as a guilty pleasure for me. He had created a romantic fic called Black Coffee which was in and of itself a big influence in my future career, especially in Paradigms. However, as lovely as the story was it did have its flaws, and so probably would be just inside my top 30. But it did inspire me to look through more of his work.

I've never been big into the Kirby series, but I like Meta Knight, so I figured this was worth a try, and it exceeded expectations. I was immediately drawn into the universe and the setting, the use of insomnia to add to the feel.

Trying to get into the enigmatic Meta Knight's psyche is something many fanfictions about him try to do, but this one does it best by far. When you make a character feel ways he rarely is shown feeling, that's a lot of risk, but it came up with a lot of reward. GenericDude manages to put Meta Knight through many very atypical scenes for his character- his vulnerability, his sadness and his love- and make it wholly believable, and that in itself is a remarkable trait.

. "Every year that goes by, trying to meet these demands...I can't keep going. I'm slowly but surely decaying every year...and because of my insomnia, I've found myself being confronted by the big question in life...when am I going to die?"

And Tiff is certainly no throwaway character, for sure. Her upbeat, optimistic views provide the perfect conversant for Meta Knight in this story- opposites attract, as they say. The relationship is believable, and the ending scene is about as good as it gets.

As aforementioned- out of all the Nintendo series, I know probably the least about Kirby, yet I knew GenericDude did a great job. He took risks, and it led to a remarkable story by a very Original Dude.

17th Best Fanfic I've Ever Read-The Amazing Race: Dreamland by Inspector Brown

17. Amazing Race-Dreamland by Inspector Brown

Section: Misc. TV Shows
Genre: Reality TV Game Show
Rating: 7+- a mostly clean story, with occasional censored language and intense scenes.
Type: TV Show Format
Status: Finished, Thirteen Episodes, 112,000 Words
Latest Update: October 24, 2006

Starring Characters: An assortment of fan-picked characters and OCs from various forms of media, including King of the Hill, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Incredibles and Back to the Future. See first page for full list.

Description: In a fictional world based off of your wildest imaginations, several fictional characters race through unimaginable, incredible obstacles for a fictional million dollars in The Amazing Race: Dreamland!

Review: This is perhaps the most detailed, thought out and incredible reality TV show reconstruction you'll ever see. If you're a fan of The Amazing Race like I am, this will sate your between season-induced appetite. Fans and friends of the author, Inspector Brown, sponsored their own characters, whether original fanfiction characters or already existing, to run through his version of the Amazing Race. But this is no ordinary Amazing Race- with fictional characters, you need a fictional world. And that is what makes this fic remarkable.

"You know," Klaus said, "I've studied a thousand or so maps and atlases, and never have I found such strange nations as the ones in Dreamland. I heard rumors that in Dreamland, there's a place that looks like an 1876 western town, but was actually built in 2004! Of course, these are just rumors, and not fact, but still…"

Every kind of fantastical, out there childhood storybook or video game-esque idea or world you could think of is here. A land inhabited by animals, a mall that houses an entire city, a leg through a suburban giantess mother's house, Inspector Brown acknowledges that the possibilities are endless and therefore he does not let the ideas stop. And it's a mesmerizing read.

But in order to make a reality TV game fic great, you have to tend to the game side of the story itself. He also does a great job at that. With the jittery, edge-of-your-seat race feel that the actual show trademarked, the defining of the teams' personalities, the tasks, the pacing, the attention to the actual rules of the show, it's all there, as if he were writing a season for the actual show. Another remarkable feat.

If you're ever curious for a fantastical, one-of-a-kind experience, there truly is no story like this one- fun, creative, thrilling and true to its source. The only true shame is that Inspector Brown hasn't written since 2006.

Genre: Humor, Drama, Romance...?
Rating: 7+- some slight, slight innuendo and confounding elements.
Type: Two Shot
Status: Finished, 7,000 Words
Finished: March 20, 2010

Starring Characters: Ganondorf, Pikmin, Olimar, Wolf

Description: The first place entry to Pikana's "Unique Pairings Contest" stars Ganondorf must figure out what to do when he falls in love with Olimar's... Pikmin...

Review: As humble a guy as Foxpilot is, you have to admit that he has big, brass balls. For his first site fic, he enters (and wins) Pikana's Unique Pairings contest- a contest that usually evokes pairings of Kirby and Pikachu, Fox and Peach, Lucario and... everyone who ISN'T Lucario, but Fox decides to go with the most outlandish, extremely crazy pairing you could think of, ever- Ganondorf, and Olimar's Pikmin.

Just... let it sink in. The most wicked villain in Nintendo's history, and walking flowers that go up to his toe. By all means, there's no way in hell that this should work. And yet, somehow, it does.

"Your eyes seem to pierce my soul, their very essence embracing me.

Your skin reminds me of clear, pure water, such a rare commodity where I'm from

That I've learned to treasure it unendingly.

The petals of your flowers are soft and tender, and I am soothed by your joyous hum.

For so long I've wanted to express my feelings for you.

It is only as I write this crap that I realize you can't read!"

Perhaps it is Foxpilot's writing style itself- he gives the crazy fic that looks like a crackfic on first sight a balance to it. There's well done humor and drama in rationed amounts so that one never overwhelms the other. This does blur the lines of what you feel like you should laugh at and what you should empathize it, but I can't tell if that's as bad as I thought at first. It gives it an air of mystery.

Not only does Foxpilot not ram the story into any extremes, but he also subtly shows the intelligence behind a GanonxPikmin story- with such a drive to lead, the idea of a harem of Pikmin is alluring to the aspiring dark king, an intelligent move on Foxpilot's part.

As a bonus, there's a downright brilliant, albeit explicit crackfic based off of this story by Kattheamazing that's sure to make you laugh. But the original is definitely an achievement- it defies your expectations by taking an outlandish idea and making it more tangible.

Type: Short Story
Status: Finished, Three Chapters, 16,000 Words

Starring Characters: Meta Knight, Helen (not an OC), Luigi

Description: Turning the archetype of the knight saving the damsel on its head, Meta Knight, a small, courageous and mysterious deep-voiced knight leads a lost woman to the Temples of Altea, through lands of monsters, harsh nature, and crazy people.

Review: The only, only thing keeping this story from going higher is the unfortunate fact that this story was technically incomplete and rushed in order to meet a deadline and that hasn't yet been rectified- if he has the intent to. But let that not deter you- Caballero Negro is an engrossing, entertaining fic with a subtle, welcome dose of humor and lightness but still weighed down enough to take it seriously.

' "But, surely you need rest as well." Helen replied quickly, slightly worried now, her gaze growing concerned. Didn't all creatures need some kind of rest? What if her escort got too tired and couldn't-

As though her worries were of absolutely no concern to him, the knight sniggered softly, and gestured for the woman to lie down and prepare for sleep as he said: "Have no fear, Lady Helen. A popular rumour among my enemies is that Meta Knight does not sleep; he only waits."

Another short laugh from the knight, as Helen, still unsure, but allowing herself a smile, lay down upon the dusty ground, arranging herself comfortably as she could, and replied: "If you say so, good warrior... I'll see you tomorrow..." '

When most people think of knights, they don't oft think of a small blue sphere with a metal mask hiding all but their large glowing eyes escorting a tall, lively green-haired woman, but that's what makes it work. Soundwave also finds ways to dig into the character to bring out enough extra personality to keep us entertained without going out of character. Meta Knight has a few smooth, humorous lines ("I simply prefer to remain in the present. Such as now. Kindly duck.") and Helen isn't a helpless, dainty woman. As is true with the tradition of knights' tales, Meta is the one that shines, but don't worry- the clever ending brings in the female empowerment.

I think that my favorite element in this story is that this is a romance story, but not only is there romance, there's chemistry. Ofttimes when people write romance stories, they never actually dwell on their building relationship, just the fact that they love each other, whether in secret, unbeknownst to each other, or just flat out already are in a relationship. Here, Soundwave masters the development between the two- it's funny, cute, has some sort of tension, it's frisky, occasionally flirty, but is by no means fluffy. Accredit one more point to Soundwave's balance.

Overall, despite its flaw, it is still a much worthwhile story well worth the read, especially for those who look for ingenuity in the typical stories while still staying true to them.
